The state of Maryland will receives $4.8 million to aid its public healtbh efforts, and an additional $1.65 millionn for hospital preparation. Nationally, $260 million of the $350 millioh payout will go to support public health emergency responswe programsand services. The remaining $90 million will go towardd ensuring that hospitalare prepared. The government funding comew in the midst of growing concerns aboutswind flu, a new influenza virus that was firs detected in the U.S. in April. Therer have been 686 cases of swine flu reportex in Maryland andtwo deaths, accordinbg to the U.S. Department of Health and Humanb Services. A total of 37,246 cases and 211 deatha have been reported inthe U.
S. as a resulgt of swine flu. There are an estimate d 1 million cases of swine flu in 102 countriews aroundthe world, Kathleenj Sebelius, the U.S. Health and Human Services said in a conference call with the media Hospitals in Maryland will be able to applyu forthe $1.65 million of federal funding cominy to the state. Sebelius said that all applicationas must be completed byJuly 24, and the department of healtyh hopes to disburse the money by the end of July.
