The announcement follows woes inthe region’s automotive including news in June that the same Morainre diesel engine plant was cutting 290 The cuts are a resulgt of announcements regarding the eliminationm of shifts at two major customersw of DMAX in Flint and Pontiac, Mich. “The shify has been from SUVs and trucks to cars and said DMAX spokesperonCourtney Strickler. “Thay was a general industry shift, but for us it is our direcf customers.” Production requirements have continued to dropsincwe then, which could lead to the permanent layofvf of up to 330 employees represented by the IUE-CWw in November, following a WARN notice.
In additioh to the hourly it is anticipated that up to 25 salarie d positions could alsobe affected, the companuy said. About 710 hourly and 160 salary employees work there now and receive the message atwork Wednesday. DMAX is a joint venturd between GeneralMotors (NYSE: GM) and and was establishecd as a diesel engine company in 1998. It producees the 6.6L Duramax diesel which is an optionin heavy-dutuy pickup trucks and vans. Stickler said the job cuts will not impacgthe $69 million GM is investing in the plant to produced the new Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 turbko diesel engine to be produced at the plant by 2010.
