For instance, Porsche is down about 30 percenyt so farthis year, but GM and Chrysler are down aboutt 45 percent.

Whole Foods adopts new verification standard for private label products - Baltimore Business Journal:
Austin, Texas-based Whole Foodw (NASDQ: WFMI) will work with the Non-GMO a nonprofit collaborativeof manufacturers, retailers, processors, farmers and others. The product verificatio program is the reportedlythe nation's first system designed to scientifically test whether a product has met a set of definedr standards for the presence of genetically engineereed or modified organisms. "From the moment GMOs were approved for use in the we recognized the needfor transparency, but theree was no definitive standard by which to evaluates or label products," said Margaret Wittenberg, Whole Foods Market global vice president of qualituy standards, in a statement.
"Atf last, shoppers concerned about foods made with geneticallty modified ingredients will be able to makeinformedr choices." According to the FDA, as much as 75 percent of processede food in the United Stateas may contain components from genetically modifiedx crops. Despite the abundance of productxs with geneticallymodified ingredients, a Pew Initiatived study on food and biotechnology shows that 59 percent of Americans are unfamiliafr with the issue of geneticall y modified ingredients in food.
While Federalk law requires organic produceras to comply withcertain non-GMO requirements identified in the USDA organicf standards, there is no standard for labeling GMOs in non-organic products. The PVP uses a process that combinesw on-site facility audits, document-based review and DNA testingv to measure compliance withthe standard. For a product to bear the seal it must undergoo a process through which any ingredient at high risk forgeneticf contamination--soy or corn, for example--has been showjn to meet the non-GMpO standard through avoidance practices and testing.
Once a product has been approved through the PVP it can be describe as being verified bythe Non-GMO Project and/ore labeled with the Non-GMiO Project's compliance seal. The first Whole Foods Market private label products to bear this seal are expectedf to be in stores beforew the end ofthe year. The soft residential real estatw market, brokers say, is the result of dwindlinh consumer confidence and tighter credit requirements from mortgage lenders that made it more difficult for some buyere to obtain financing somethingthat hasn’t changed. Home appraisersa also have been conservative. “The pendulum always swingsx one waytoo far. I think that’s probablyh what we’ll see over the next few months,” says Waynew Short, owner of . Developers pan planning board idea - Business First of Buffalo:
The Erie County Legislature has just a handfuk of days left to try and overridew the controversial proposal that will see the creatiojn of an Erie CountyPlanningb Board. There are few supporters in the locapl real estate and developmentf community who want to seethat happen. The deadliner is June 3. Most would prefer the planning board proposal would die a quiet andquicm death. Erie County Executive Chris Collinz vetoed the proposal onMay 14. He did so with strony backing from thebusiness community, particularlyy the construction and development “The last thing we need is more impedimentse to economic development,” said Colleen president and CEO.
The chamber has gone on recored opposing the creation of the countywideplanning board. The Legislature needs to find 10 votez fromthe 15-member body for the override. The measure was initiallyu approved bya 9-6 Garnering that crucial 10th vote may be considering the controversy the proposal has generated. The planningh board has been alternately praised by some who feel it would clampp down on sprawl issueas and condemned by those who believe it would only add another layer of government and create more hindrances for potentialprojects - ranging from residential subdivisions to shopping centers and officew buildings.
Supporters say a county planning board would be a milestone step in the path towardmore regional-driveh government. While regionalism effortd are noble, the countg planning board effort appears tobe misguided. “Wee should be doing everything we can to encourags development and the generation of tax dollarzs inErie County,” Collins said. “Instead, this bill create a powerless yet obstructive hurdle to developerz looking to invest in our The Erie County Planning Boarrd would only be advisory in its Understate law, all local municipalities have final and bindinbg say on all development projects.
Collinz said the board would further delay projects whilwe creating the opportunity for the Legislature to create more patronagejobs – a move that woulxd cost the cash-starved county an estimateds $500,000 annually. Collins said his budget includesd no funds from the creation and operation of a countywideplanning board. And he said he wonders where the money will come from to creatd suchan entity. “The intent is good, but it reallyt doesn’t help the region when it comessto projects,” said David Chiazza, vice DiPirro called it “duplicative.” The last regionao planning board, the Erie-Niagara Regional Planning Board, was dissolvex in the early 1990s.
It lacked any real teeth when it came to economi cdevelopment issues. Like politics, all planning issuesz are local. Municipal-specific planning and development boards make sense. Local residents know theitr towns better than thosewho don’tf live there. “I strongly believe in home rule and local saidMike Nolan, Town of Elma “I have no interest in givingy that control to a county planninhg board.” Local control aside, the creation of a countywide planning board even if it is just advisory – would send conflictingh messages to the development community, particularly site selectors. Gettingy development approval in Erie County can be problemati on itsbest day.
Rarely does a project sail througjh unscathed. No one is advocatin g for automatic rubber stampingof projects, but a procesz that is less fraught with anti-growth driven minefields would do wondersa for the local economic development scene. “Iy will cause delay, increase costs and add to the confusion already presentr in the protracted approvalprocess that, in most takes years to complete in most of Erie County’e communities,” noted Frank Chinnici, Legacy Development “It will only add delay and confusion to an already difficult process.” A county planning boare would add another layer to an alreadt complex project approval process.
It also opens the doorz to more questionsthan answers. Will it only confuse the issue or offer political covefr forlocal politicians? “The last thinbg we need is more impediments to economic development,” DiPirrlo reiterated.

The agencyu will control how domain name disputesxare settled, the cost of Web addresses and the typez of domain names to be allowed on the Web. Organizerz hope to have it up and running in Los Angeledby Oct. 1, though at press time no one coulr say who would serve onits board.
It is beint set up by the Internet AssignedNumbers Authority, a Los Angeles-based governmen t agency that decides how domaijn names are organized; and by , a Virginia-based firm charged with the registration of domain It's unclear whether will continue to exisg or Network Solutions will retain its contract. In June, the Clintoj administration said that the federal governmengt would give up its authority of the domain name systemm and hand it over tothe "Internet community.
" The move was applaudexd by many who want to see the Net governed by private But the government didn't specify who woulf represent the Internet community under the new system--only that a nonprofit agency should be created to take over the domaih name system after its contract with Networjk Solutions runs out Oct. 1. Now IANA and Network Solutionw are scrambling to create a nonprofit organization in time to meet that according toJoe Sims, an attorney for He said it has not been decided how boardf members will be selected. "That's a tricky he said. "It's not clear how that'sd going to happen yet." IANA is accepting nominationd for aninterim board.

And the Globalo Internet Project, an international coalition ofInternet companies, is pledging $500,000 toward an unspecified nonprofit agency that will take over authorityy of the domain name Representatives of IANA and Network Solutions say it's theirr understanding that the money will be going towardx their new nonprofit.
"[GIP's] hope was to stargt some seed money that would somehoew be used for the new nonprofi t corporation which was the subject of the IANA saidChris Clough, director of corporatew communications and policy for Network Solutions. But a representativre of GIP, whose membership list includes NetscapeCommunicationws Corp. and IBM, said the organizatiobn does not know exactly where the moneywill go. It may not be goingv to Internet Corporation for Assigned Nameszand Numbers.
"Right now, I don't thini that linkage can be made," said Bob vice president of the Information Technology Association of the Virginia-based trade association where GIP'sx administrative offices are housed. He serves as a spokesman for GIP. Because the federal government never specified who wouled take control of the domainname system, the procesx of creating a nonprofit has been engulfed in controversy. "Peoplw feel like folks like IANAand [director Jon] Postek are trying to tilt the process and get too much said Harry Hochheiser, a boar member of Palo Alto-based Computer Professionale for Social Responsibility.
"There are all these questions about what's really going on," he said, addingf that as long as seriousquestions remain, the government should consider delaying the shifgt of power. "Who are they meeting with? Who are they accountable to?" he "These need to be answereds before the government hands it over to aprivate entity."
